Kekkai
As in her previous work, Hiroko Kamogawa explores notions of 'space';
space that exists between separate entities in this new photographic installation, Kekkai.
Kekkai is a term used to describe a space/line that divides two worlds.
Choosing locations where taking just one more step could make one's life irreversible,
Kamogawa depicts hidden tension between serenity and turmoil.
Aokigahara, the forest at the bottom of Mt. Fuji,
is known for an endless number of suicides of those who chose being lost
in the dense and endless forest, as their resting place.
Kamogawa also photographed at various other locations such as
Waterloo Bridge and Isle of Wight.
While calmness and tranquillity of Kamogawa's photographs initially revealed,
this body of work also encompasses unsettling stillness.
